History

The British Infantry was crucial in the liberation of North West Europe following the D-Day landings in June 1944. From the Normandy beaches through the dense bocage of northern France, British troops advanced across Belgium and the Netherlands, moving towards Germany. The infantry units were armed with various weapons such as the Lee-Enfield rifle, Sten submachine gun, and Bren light machine gun, providing essential firepower for the intense battles they faced. Officers and NCOs led their troops through some of the war's toughest terrain and fiercest fighting, from Operation Market Garden to the Rhine crossing. The distinctive battledress and webbing gear worn by these soldiers became emblematic of the British Army's efforts in Europe, symbolising the determination and resilience of the men who fought from the Atlantic shores to the heart of the Third Reich.
