Today we are looking at AMT's 1962 Pontiac Catalina Custom. This model kit was designed at the time when AMT, Monogram and Revell were directly competing with Tamyia, Fujimi and Hasegawa to build the best model car kits in the world, (in the 1990's - early 2000's) and this kit really delivers on that promise.
This is the "Second Part" to last week's review of the custom version of the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 SD kit and shares much of the same components. However, there are some major changes in enough parts to make this kit unique and a good compliment to the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 SD kit for those of you who like to build both Stock and Custom variants, or if you want to buy this kit as a stand-alone model.
So what are the differences between the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina Custom and the 1962 Pontiac Catalina SD 421 kit?
To begin with, the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina has an excellent re-creation of the stock interior. AMT designed new molds for the front and rear seats and inner door panels with this upholstery pattern and each seat has a Pontiac Arrowhead logo head in it, just like the real thing.
The second difference in the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina is the wheel and tire combination. Here you get a set of Factory Stock Steel wheels with "Poverty" chrome plated steel hub caps. The rear wheels include drag slicks for the drag strip.
Custom body features include an accurate chrome plated grill, quad headlights, and rear tail lights.
Once again, the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina is an amazing model kit that goes together easily and will look terrific on your model kit shelf. AMT did a wonderful job in making this kit and I highly recommend it!
