The standard engine choice was a 400 ci L78 V8 rated at 350 hp with a single four-barrel carburetor. Two new optional 400 ci engines offered even higher performance: the 360 hp L69, with three two-barrel Rochester 2GC carburetors on a progressive linkage and 440 lb⋅ft of torque, which was priced at US$264.54 and the rare W30. The 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible by AMT includes the 350 HP engine with the floor-mounted manual transmissions including the optional heavy-duty three-speed.

Inside, a revised instrument panel featured two round pods for the speedometer and other instruments, replacing the horizontal sweep speedometer of 1964–65 models, but the rest of the basic dashboard designed was unchanged. This is also reflected in the 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible by AMT/ERTL.

The AMT/ERTL 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible is an excellent representation of this car. This model kit came out in the 1990's when AMT was competing with Revell, Monogram and Japanese model manufacturers like Tamyia, Fujimi and Hasagawa for the most detailed plastic model kits.

Therefore, this model kit has over 100 parts and includes many separate pieces to make up the whole model kit. Modelers are treated to such features as a choice between a Custom or Factory Stock wheels, full height interior panels, a super detailed engine with air conditioning pump, power steering pump, cylinder heads with rocker arms, an engine block with cylinders in position, a dashboard with floor pedals, and many other highly detailed suspension components.

The instructions for the 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible by AMT/ERTL are easy to follow and include color call-outs for the engine block, wheels and interior, suspension, manifolds and exhaust pipes and other such items. If you wish to match colors to Oldsmobile factory specifications, your local General Motors dealership or autobody repair shop should be able to assist you with these paint codes.

The detail on the plastic parts are crisp and clear and go together quite easily. This kit benefits from the individually molded interior door panels that AMT was producing in the steel molds, resulting in consistent door panel features and persistent detail in window winder cranks and door handles.

The chrome on this model kit is excellent and really enhances the look of the finished car. The grill includes the quad headlights as separate pieces just like the real 442. This allows the model builder to paint the grill without getting paint on the headlight chrome. To finish off the chrome on the body, I recommend using Bare Metal Foil and a brand new #11 hobby blade.

Overall, the AMT/ERTL 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible model car kit is an excellent model kit that goes together very well. The kit overall is so great that it is a joy to build. If you can find any of these kits, I highly recommend you get one!
